The obvious statement of the week award goes to: this story from the Guardian

Actually the funny part isn’t really the fault of the Guardian, it’s a statement on behalf of Britain’s review of their intelligence agencies. Britain’s lack of preparedness “may reveal a lack of understanding of the region.” Yeah, I guess if they had understood better, they would have prepared better.

Maybe.

I don’t claim to understand the Middle East any better than anyone else, but I’d hazard a guess that the biggest mistake we make in trying to understand the Middle East is assuming it’s the same as the West. It’s really not, and if we don’t have the historical awareness they do, we’re going to miss the fact that a lot of the conflict over there has been going on since long before we tried to get involved.
